Los Angeles, California – Snowball, ii will be releasing their sophomore album Doughnut Hole on September 16 via Doughnut Records. Straying from their usual noise pop/shoegaze sound, Snowball, ii goes down the neo-folk route and present their single “I Doughnut Want To Live”. There is something about this song that is simple and honest that makes me really love it. The simple melodies and straightforward lyrics kind of remind me of Fog Lake. There is also something heartbreaking yet encouraging about “I Doughnut Want To Live” that lets me relate to it. Take a listen to the track and relish in its songwriting.
Los Angeles, California – There’s just not enough positive, world beat-driven music these days. Rachel West recently shared her newest track “Run Run” and it’s the kind of song that makes you want to jump up and dance because it’s so catchy and happy. West’s vocals have that perfect sound that contrasts nicely with the heavier background male vocals. I really appreciate the afrobeat on “Run Run” because it gives modern pop such a fresher sound that makes it so much better.
Los Angeles, CA – Valley Queen caught my attention back in May and they’ve once again put themselves on my radar with their new track “In My Place”. This track will be released on August 12 with their single “High Expectations”. Their lead vocalist, Carol, has one of the strongest pair of vocals and they’re reminiscent of other strong female vocalists such as Stevie Nicks and Florence Welch. With “In My Place”, we get a perfect blend of indie rock and more classic rock-rooted vocals. At first, her vocals may sound like they don’t fit song but when you hear the intensity of each, they match up perfectly to create a whirlwind of a track. Perfectly soulful.

Austin, TX – The Lagoons return to Abduction Radiation with their newest track “California”. The duo, originally from Los Angeles, followed up their EP Hypocrisy last year with a more jazz-driven sound but still keeping their usual soft indie pop sound. If you listen to their lead single “Hypocrisy” and listen to “California”, you’ll definitely hear a sophistication within their music. This new single has a cleaner and more defined sound and the stronger role of jazz in this song really give their sound such a nice sound.

Los Angeles, CA – In October, Ablebody will be releasing their album Adult Contemporaries via Lolipop! Records. From the album is synth pop track “Backseat Heart”, a groovy upbeat track that’ll whisk you away. One of my favorite things about this track is the synthy intro because it is so insanely synthy and the melody on it is kind of sexy. The track segues into a more pop rock sound with the distinct guitar picking and steady drums. “Backseat Heart” is a pretty catchy track and you’ll definitely appreciate the little synth samples scattered throughout the track.

Los Angeles, CA – If you guys haven’t heard by now, Katy Goodman (La Sera) and Greta Morgan (Springtime Carnivore) are teaming up to present Take It, It’s Yours, an album of covers of some of the greatest rock hits. They recently shared their take on “Sex Beat” by Gun Club. The mellowness of the song and Goodman’s extremely calm voice give the original track a run for its money. While the overall composition is still the same, Goodman and Morgan really slow it down for a more heavy impact.
One of my favorite things about Take It, It’s Yours is that we have two fantastic female musicians taking on some of the greatest rock tracks created by men (with the exception of a few like Blondie, and Debbie Harry is a goddess). They really give their own spin on the tracks and their takes just sound incredible.
Take It, It’s Yours will be released on August 26 via Polyvinyl Records. Check out the tracklist:
1. Over The Edge (Wipers)
2. Pay to Cum (Bad Brains)
3. Bastards of Young (The Replacements)
4. Sex Beat (The Gun Club)
5. Ever Fallen in Love (Buzzcocks)
6. Where Eagles Dare (The Misfits)
7. I Wanna Be Your Dog (The Stooges)
8. In the City (The Jam)
9. Dreaming (Blondie)
10. Rebel Yell (Billy Idol)
Los Angeles, CA – At the beginning of last month, I went to Make Music Pasadena and one of the bands that I wanted to see was PAPA. To keep it brief, they put on one hell of a show and it was definitely one of the most upbeat shows I had been to in a while. Before they ended their set, they announced that they would be releasing a new album soon – and here it is! PAPA will be releasing their sophomore album Kick at the Dust on September 16 via Hit City U.S.A. The first track to be released from the album is “Comfort’s a Killer”, a bubbly indie pop rock track. I think you can just tell from the first beats of the drums that this song is going to be one that’ll keep you dancing all night long. As per their classic sound, “Comfort’s a Killer” has a pretty groovy beat especially during the verses.
